Contests

In commemoration of Earth Day 2008, in addition to the ridesharing initiative, Ecology and Environment, Inc. is hosted two competitions for high school students in Erie and Niagara Counties.

Sustainable Ideas Contest

The sustainable Ideas Contest promoted overall efforts toward sustainability. We wanted to hear your school’s most unique idea for making your school “Green.”

For example, what are your ideas for energy efficiency, community cleanup, or recycling within your school?

Ideas were to be submitted by April 11, 2008, and the winner notified on or before April 22, 2008.

The winning will be awarded with a $500 prize to be used toward a sustainable effort of their choice. The idea will be showcased on The Project Earth Network. Submitted ideas are judged based on overall creativity, practicality, and tangible environmental benefit.

Logo Contest

Orchard Park HS Students Design Logo to be used in Promotion
of Buffalo-Niagara's Earth Day 2008 Initiative

LANCASTER, N.Y.—Two Orchard Park High School (OPHS) sophomores have designed the logo that will be used to promote the Buffalo-Niagara region’s first-ever “Earth Day 2008” initiative, which is aimed at raising awareness locally of issues associated with global warming. On April 22, Buffalo-Niagara commuters will carpool and use alternative transportation on a large scale to demonstrate their commitment to reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, while building an awareness of what we can do locally to fight global warming.

“The fate of the world is now in my generation’s hands, and I think we should do as much as we can do while we can.  I mean . . . it’s our home,” said Katie Pataky, one of the designers of the logo chosen to represent Earth Day 2008.  Katie designed the logo along with fellow Orchard Park sophomore, Mindy McCabe.  The students, both members of the ecology club at OPHS, entered their creation in a contest held by Ecology and Environment, Inc., (E & E) and were selected based on overall use of design elements that reflect the Buffalo-Niagara region’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

On Wednesday, January 23, E & E presented the students and their biology teacher, Mark VanDerwater, with a $500 check, which they accepted on behalf of Orchard Park High School.  The money will be used towards the design and implementation of a sustainable effort of the school’s choosing.

E & E, in conjunction with the Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, Buffalo Niagara Partnership, Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council and their corporate members, Buffalo Niagara Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Buffalo Niagara Human Resource Association, will use the logo to promote this upcoming regional initiative on Earth Day.

Headquartered in Lancaster, New York, E & E is one of the world’s leading organizations in pioneering innovative methods of ridesharing and alternative transportation.
